Obedience Classes

Who should attend obedience training classes?

Didn't manage to make puppy classes but have a dog who could do with some training? Got a bored adolescent dog who is driving you crazy? Adopted a new adult dog and want to start out right? Need to teach your dog obedience basics or just want to have fun with your dog? Enrol in a our obedience class and learn how to train your dog in a way that's fast, easy and fun.

This class is suitable for dogs of all ages who have not attended dog training classes before. We will give you all the basics for training your dog to be a pleasure to live with using lure and reward training with food and toys, clicker and TTouch. Although we teach all handlers to use clicker in this class, you also have the option of training without clicker, if you find you prefer this.

In the obedience class we will cover:

  • Dealing with leash pulling; how to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash and have a calm, focused dog during walks.
  • Simple ways to deal with jumping up, chewing, biting, digging, barking, toilet training and other common doggy issues.
  • Basic obedience commands; teaching your dog to focus on you, heel, sit, lie down, stay and settle down on request.
  • Have your dog leave and give up items on request.
  • Teach your dog to respond well to their name and come reliably when called.
  • Learn some basic clicker and TTouch skills.
  • Develop the bond between you and your dog and learn to communicate with them in a way that is gentle and fun.

About Furbabies obedience classes

The obedience courses run for six lessons of an hour each on Saturdays or Sundays, in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. They are suitable for dogs who need some basic training and who are reasonably friendly with other dogs. If we find your dog has trouble adjusting to group classes we will help you with some private lessons.

All dogs whose owners wish to enroll them in an obedience class, and who have not been to any Furbabies classes before, may first be required to come for an assessment. Dogs of all breeds and ages are welcome.

Class sizes are limited to ensure individual attention and allow for us to specifically address owners' problem areas within the class context. You will receive a clicker and information cd included in the course fee.

Please note that while you and your dog are starting out with training it is preferable to have one dog per handler in a class, if you have two dogs you wish to train you may want to enroll them in two different classes or bring someone along to help you.

All family members are welcome to come along to class. Our training methods are safe and easy for children to learn, but kids must please be supervised by an adult during classes.
